A boat anchor winch is sized to the ground tackle, not to the boat, and chosen by the rode you anchor with, not the brand on the box. Get three things right, the winch type, the sizing arithmetic and the wiring run to the bow, and the winch will haul reliably for years. Get any of them wrong and it will struggle from the first season. This guide walks through how we work through all three.
Drum winch or windlass: the rode decides
The first fork in the road is not size but type, and your anchor rode makes the decision for you.
A drum winch spools the whole rode, rope with a short chain leader, onto a single drum. It is the usual fit on Australian trailer boats, runabouts and smaller cruisers: a simple deck-mounted unit, quick to deploy and recover, with freefall models that drop the anchor under its own weight for fast setting. If you anchor mostly on rope, this is your category.
A windlass hauls the rode over a shaped wheel called a gypsy and suits vessels anchoring on all-chain, or on a rope-and-chain rode spliced to run over the one wheel. Cruisers, motor yachts and superyachts running chain live here. Windlasses come in two layouts: vertical, with the motor and gearbox hidden below deck for a clean foredeck, and horizontal, with the whole unit on deck for boats without locker depth below. The choice between them is usually made by the anchor locker, not by preference.
Sizing an anchor winch: the three-to-one rule
Winch manufacturers publish a consistent rule of thumb: the winch's maximum pull should be at least three times the combined weight of the anchor and rode. Weigh or calculate what hangs off the bow roller, the anchor, every metre of chain, any rope, then multiply by three. The winch's published maximum pull needs to clear that figure comfortably.
The multiplier is not padding. Maximum pull is a stall figure, and no winch should live near it; the working load a winch sustains all day is a fraction of its rating. The margin is what covers a rode coming up wet and muddy, a bit of wind across the bow, and the anchor breaking out of the seabed. Two habits protect the winch beyond the arithmetic: motor gently up to the anchor so the winch recovers rode rather than dragging the vessel, and snub the chain off on a cleat or chain stopper once set, so the winch never holds the boat at anchor. A winch that is asked to do either of those jobs is being asked to do the engine's and the cleat's.
Displacement and windage matter as a cross-check: a heavy or high-sided vessel loads the rode harder in a blow, which is why two boats of the same length can want different winches. When the three-to-one figure and the vessel's character disagree, size to the harder answer.
Match the gypsy to the chain, exactly
The most common specification mistake we see is a near-match. A windlass gypsy is cut for a specific chain size and calibration, and chain that is almost right seats almost properly, which under load means it jumps the gypsy or jams in it. The same applies to rope-and-chain gypsies, where the splice has to be made to suit the wheel.
So the gypsy is specified from the chain's actual measurements, not from memory. If you are reusing an existing rode, measure the link diameter and length, or better, bring a short sample. If the chain is tired, replacing chain and gypsy together costs less than it sounds, and less than a winch that skips under load.
The wiring to the bow makes or breaks it
An electric anchor winch is one of the highest-current devices on the vessel, at the far end of one of its longest cable runs. Undersized cable drops voltage exactly when the motor is working hardest, and a winch that runs slow, stalls under load or trips its breaker is as often a wiring problem as a winch problem.
A proper install runs cable sized for the current and the distance, protects the circuit with a breaker or isolator that matches the winch's rating, and keeps every connection along the run sealed against corrosion. The solenoid or contactor, the foot switches and the helm control all live in that circuit too, and any of them can be the reason a winch has gone lame. It is electrical work on a wet foredeck, and it is where a good install earns its keep years later.
Typical picks by boat
With the arithmetic made, the table below is where vessels commonly land. Treat it as a sanity check on your own ground-tackle numbers, not a substitute for them.

One honest caveat: if your existing winch struggles, the fix is not automatically a bigger winch. A slipping clutch, a worn gypsy, a tired solenoid or voltage drop at the bow all produce the same symptom, and all cost less to put right than a new unit. The ground-tackle arithmetic is the start of the job. Before a model goes on a quote we also look at the foredeck itself: the deck structure and backing where the winch through-bolts, the fall of chain into the locker (a vertical windlass needs enough drop below the deck for the chain to stack), how the bow roller lines up with the gypsy, and what the cable run back to the batteries really involves on your vessel.
