Mechanical Simplicity

The DC control system uses robust relays instead of an unrepairable printed circuit board, and the fuel lift pump is mechanical with a hand primer. Fewer electronics means fewer things to fail.

Built to Last

Cast-iron and forged carbon-steel internals, gear-driven seawater pumps and Class “H” generator insulation give a conservative 95 °C / 50 °C heat-rise rating for long life in marine heat.

Easy to Service

Spin-on fuel and oil filters, base-pan oil drains, removable heat-exchanger end caps and 200 to 250-hour service intervals make routine maintenance straightforward, anywhere.

Quiet by Design

A cast intake manifold with the Sound Maze system cuts noise at the source, and an optional sound enclosure makes liveaboard running comfortable.

Clean, Stable Power

Close ±1% voltage regulation on most generators, and a dedicated AC winding for true 300% short-circuit protection on the larger models, protects sensitive onboard electronics.

Four-cycle, 3-cylinder, liquid-cooled, naturally aspirated, overhead-valve diesel with glow plugs for quick starting. Swirl combustion chambers improve fuel efficiency and reduce smoke.

Cooling system

Standard heat-exchanger cooling with optional keel cooling. The copper-nickel, tube-type heat exchanger has removable rubber end caps for easy cleaning and no need for zincs. The bronze and stainless-steel seawater pump with rubber impeller is gear driven, eliminating a potential failure point.

Fuel system

The self-venting fuel system features an inline injection pump with a 3 to 5% mechanical governor for close AC frequency control. The stop solenoid acts directly on the fuel rack, eliminating external linkage problems. The fuel lift pump is mechanical with a hand primer, eliminating electronic pump failures. Flexible fuel lines are plumbed to the base pan as standard.

Intake and exhaust

Meets US EPA Tier III at 60 Hz and IMO Tier II at 50 Hz. The cast-aluminium intake manifold with Sound Maze system reduces noise, and the washable air cleaner makes routine maintenance simple. The wet exhaust elbow is stainless steel.

Choosing the right marine generator

A few things worth getting right before you buy. We’ll walk through all of it with you, but here’s the short version.

Sizing, start with your loads

Air-conditioning is usually the biggest single draw on a boat, followed by the galley, watermaker, battery chargers and pumps. You want a generator that comfortably carries your continuous load plus the surge of the largest motor starting, without running lightly loaded for long periods, which isn’t good for a diesel. We run a full load calculation for your vessel before recommending a model, and our generator sizing guide walks through the whole method.

50 Hz or 60 Hz?

Australian shore power and most onboard equipment is 230 V / 50 Hz, so Australian-flagged vessels almost always run the 50 Hz rating. Boats built for the US market, or that cruise internationally, may be wired for 60 Hz. Every Northern Lights generator is rated at both; we confirm the right configuration for how and where you use the boat.

Cooling & sound

Most installations use standard heat-exchanger (raw-water) cooling; keel cooling is an option for silty or debris-laden waters. Every generator uses the Sound Maze intake to cut noise, and we strongly recommend the optional sound enclosure for liveaboard comfort, along with proper engine-room insulation and soft mounts.

Installation matters as much as the generator

A great generator can be let down by a poor install. Exhaust routing, raw-water plumbing, vibration isolation and electrical tie-in all affect reliability, noise and longevity, which is why we install and commission everything we supply, then sea-trial and sign it off.

What size Northern Lights generator do I need for my boat?

Sizing comes down to your total electrical load. Air-conditioning is usually the biggest single draw, followed by galley appliances, watermakers, battery chargers and pumps. As a rule of thumb you size the generator to comfortably carry your continuous load plus the surge of the largest motor starting, without running the generator lightly loaded for long periods. The Northern Lights range spans 4.5kW to 38kW; we run a load calculation for your vessel before recommending a model.

How much does a marine generator cost?

Size, build quality and the installation itself decide the price, so we quote rather than publish figures. The cost moves with output, single- or three-phase configuration, sound shielding and how involved the engine-room fit-out is, and a small portable petrol unit is a different purchase altogether from a marine diesel generator permanently installed in a cruiser, motor yacht or superyacht. What is the difference between a marine generator and a regular generator?

A marine generator is purpose-built for the saltwater environment. It is marinised for corrosion resistance, uses raw-water (heat-exchanger) or keel cooling rather than a radiator and fan, runs a marine wet exhaust, and holds close voltage and frequency regulation to protect sensitive onboard electronics, all in a compact, low-vibration package designed to run safely in an enclosed engine room. Petrol marine generators are also ignition-protected to reduce the risk of fuel-vapour ignition. A standard land or portable generator has none of this and is neither safe nor durable for permanent installation on a boat. Northern Lights builds its generators to marine standards, ABYC A-27, Lloyd's Register type-approval, CE marking and US EPA Tier III / IMO Tier II emissions compliance.

How long do marine generators last?

A well-maintained marine diesel generator typically lasts 10,000 to 30,000 running hours, and a high-quality generator given regular servicing and the occasional overhaul can reach 20,000 to 40,000 hours, often 20 years or more of cruising. Lifespan comes down to load and maintenance: running the generator within its rating rather than lightly loaded for long periods, changing oil and filters on schedule, and keeping fuel and cooling water clean. Northern Lights generators are engineered for long marine life with cast-iron and forged-steel internals, conservative heat-rise ratings and 200 to 250-hour service intervals, and we service the generators we supply to help them reach it.

Should I choose a 50 Hz or 60 Hz generator in Australia?

How loud is a marine generator, and can it be made quieter?

Every Northern Lights generator uses a cast intake manifold with the Sound Maze system to reduce noise at the source. An optional sound enclosure reduces it further and is strongly recommended for liveaboard comfort. We can also advise on engine-room insulation, soft mounts and exhaust treatment as part of an installation.

Heat-exchanger or keel cooling?

Most installations use standard heat-exchanger (raw-water) cooling, which is simple and effective. Keel cooling is available as an option and suits vessels operating in heavily silted or debris-laden water where raw-water intakes are prone to fouling.
