Marine hydraulics on the Gold Coast
Marine Solutions Australia designs, installs, services and repairs marine hydraulic systems from Gold Coast City Marina, Coomera — hydraulic steering, stabiliser and thruster hydraulics, cranes, davits and passerelles, swim platforms and deck machinery — on recreational, commercial and superyacht vessels across South East Queensland. Hydraulics is core, everyday work for our engineering team.
We handle the whole system, not just the part: pressure and leak fault-finding, powerpack and ram rebuilds and reseals, new installs, commissioning to manufacturer spec, and custom hose and fitting fabrication when an off-the-shelf component won’t fit. Most servicing is done dockside by our mobile teams, with rebuilds and bigger installs completed in the Coomera workshop.
Whether your hydraulic steering has gone light, a platform won’t hold, a ram is weeping, or you’re fitting a crane or davit as part of a wider refit, we diagnose it properly, fix the root cause and sign the system off — and support it for the life of the vessel.
Hydraulics engineered, not just topped up
Marine hydraulics is unforgiving — salt, heat, vibration and contaminated fluid punish a system that’s been bodged, and a steering or lifting failure offshore is the worst time to find out. Our engineers diagnose across the whole circuit, rebuild rams and powerpacks to manufacturer spec, and commission and pressure-test every system before sign-off. We work from a full Coomera workshop with a hydraulic press and bench, back it with mobile service across SE Queensland, and service every major brand — supplied by us or not.

The hydraulic systems we design, install and service
From the steering on a flybridge cruiser to the davits and passerelle on a superyacht, we work across every hydraulic system on board — and the powerpacks and plumbing that drive them.
Hydraulic steering
Helm pumps, steering cylinders and rams, tie-bars and multi-station plumbing for outboard, sterndrive and inboard vessels — supplied, installed, bled and commissioned, or repaired when the steering goes light, stiff or starts losing fluid.
Stabiliser & thruster hydraulics
The hydraulic side of fin stabilisers, bow and stern thrusters and ride-control — powerpacks, pumps, valve blocks and rams sized and plumbed to deliver continuous, reliable thrust and roll control without flattening the system.
Cranes, davits & passerelles
Tender and toy cranes, davits and hydraulic passerelles and gangways — designed, installed, serviced and rebuilt so deck and boarding gear lifts smoothly, holds load safely and stows cleanly every time.
Swim platforms & transom gear
Hydraulic swim and bathing platforms, submersible and lifting platforms and transom doors — cylinders, seals and control valves serviced and resealed so they raise, lower and seal without creep, leaks or drift.
Windlass & deck machinery
Hydraulic anchor windlasses, capstans, winches and deck machinery — fault-found, serviced and rebuilt, with pump, motor and valve work to keep ground tackle and mooring gear working when you need it.
Powerpacks & distribution
Central hydraulic powerpacks, PTO and engine-driven pumps, manifolds, accumulators, coolers and the hose and pipe runs that tie a vessel’s hydraulics together — specified, plumbed, commissioned and maintained as one system.
Hydraulic or cable steering — which suits your boat?
Hydraulic steering is the most common reason owners call us, whether it’s an upgrade from a heavy cable helm, a second station, or steering that’s gone light and needs bleeding or resealing. Here’s how the two approaches compare — we’ll help you choose and do the work.
| Consideration | Hydraulic steering | Cable / mechanical |
|---|---|---|
| Best suited to | Larger and twin outboards, sterndrive and inboard, anything carrying real steering load | Smaller single outboards and light, low-powered boats |
| Helm effort | Light and consistent — no kickback through the wheel | Heavier; gets worse with engine size, trim and sea state |
| Feel & feedback | Smooth and damped, easy on long passages | More direct “road feel”, but more fatiguing |
| Twin helms / flybridge | Easily plumbed to a second or third station | Difficult and limited |
| Upkeep | Fluid checks, the occasional bleed, periodic seal service | Cable lubrication and eventual cable replacement |
Soft, spongy or wandering steering is usually air in the system or a seal letting by — often a bleed and fluid change, sometimes a cylinder reseal. We diagnose it properly rather than just topping up the fluid, and tie steering work into thruster, stabiliser and engine repower or thruster and stabiliser jobs while the boat’s already in.
Find the real fault, rebuild it properly
Hydraulic faults rarely show where they start. We diagnose across the whole circuit, reseal and rebuild rather than just replace where it’s sound, and commission every system before it goes back on the water.
Leak & pressure fault-finding
Steering gone soft, a system losing pressure, a platform that won’t hold or a slow weep at a fitting — we trace the actual cause across pumps, valves, cylinders, seals and hoses rather than throwing parts at it, and tell you what we found.
Ram & cylinder reseals
Steering cylinders, stabiliser and platform rams and crane and davit cylinders stripped, honed, reseal-kitted and rebuilt to manufacturer spec — restoring a scored or leaking ram instead of replacing the whole assembly where it’s sound.
Powerpack & pump rebuilds
Powerpack, pump, motor and valve-block overhauls — bearings, seals, couplings and worn internals replaced, contaminated fluid flushed and the system bled and set back to correct pressure and flow.
Commissioning to spec
Every system is filled with the correct fluid, bled, pressure-set, load-tested and where relevant sea-trialled before sign-off — so steering, lifting and stabilising gear works the day you take the boat back and keeps working.
The parts we fit, made to suit your vessel
We’re brand-agnostic on hydraulics and set up to make up what an off-the-shelf catalogue can’t — so an older or unusual system is repairable, not a write-off.
Components we stock and fit
We stock and fit Parker and Opacmare hydraulic components — cylinders, valves, fittings and passerelle and platform gear — and source genuine parts and seal kits for the systems we service. The right component for your vessel and how it’s used, not whatever’s easiest to get.
Steering & hydraulic brands we service
We install and service the major marine steering and hydraulic systems — SeaStar/Dometic, HyDrive, BayStar and UltraFlex among them, and Capilano and Kobelt on larger vessels — without being tied to one badge, and we service systems whether or not we supplied them. For thruster and stabiliser hydraulics we’re an authorised Sleipner Side-Power dealer as well.
Custom hoses & fabrication
When the off-the-shelf part won’t do — an awkward run, a non-standard length, an obsolete component or a one-off mount — we make up custom hydraulic hoses and fabricate the fittings and brackets to suit. It’s how we recommission older systems and route new ones cleanly.
Documented and commissioned
Every system is filled with the correct fluid, bled, pressure-set and load-tested, and we record the work — the same rigour we bring to insurance repairs and superyacht work, so it stands up to a surveyor, an insurer and the sea.
Hydraulics & engineering in action
Rebuild, install and servicing work from our Gold Coast City Marina workshop and mobile teams — the same crew that handles engineering, refits and insurance repairs.
Marine hydraulics — common questions
The systems we service, hydraulic versus cable steering, cost, ram reseals, why a system loses pressure or leaks, custom fittings, the brands we use, and how we work.
What marine hydraulic systems do you service?
We design, install, service and repair the full range of marine hydraulics: hydraulic steering (helm pumps, cylinders, rams and multi-station plumbing), the hydraulic side of fin stabilisers and bow and stern thrusters, hydraulic cranes, davits and passerelles, swim and bathing platforms and transom doors, and hydraulic windlasses, capstans and deck machinery — plus the powerpacks, pumps, manifolds and hose runs that drive them. We work on recreational boats, commercial vessels and superyachts, and we service systems we supplied as well as those fitted by others.
Is hydraulic steering on a boat worth it, and is it better than cable steering?
For most boats with any real steering load — larger or twin outboards, sterndrive, inboard, or anything with a flybridge — hydraulic steering is well worth it. It’s lighter and more consistent at the helm, removes the kickback you feel through a cable wheel, is far easier on long days, and plumbs simply to a second or third station. Cable (mechanical) steering still suits small, low-powered single-outboard boats where it’s cheaper and perfectly adequate, but it gets noticeably heavier as engine size, trim and sea state increase. If you’re upgrading, we’ll advise whether hydraulic steering makes sense for your hull and how you use the boat, then supply, install, bleed and commission it.
How much does marine hydraulic work cost?
There’s no flat rate — hydraulic work is quoted to the job, because a steering bleed and fluid change is a very different piece of work to a full powerpack rebuild or a new davit install. The main drivers are the system involved, whether we’re fault-finding, resealing a ram, rebuilding a powerpack or installing new gear, the parts and seal kits required, and how accessible the components are on your vessel. For diagnostics we’ll give you an estimate up front; for rebuilds and installs we quote in writing before any work begins. Call 07 5612 7161 with your vessel and what it’s doing and we’ll talk you through likely cost and the best way to tackle it.
Can you rebuild or reseal a hydraulic ram or cylinder?
Yes — ram and cylinder reseals are core hydraulic work for us. We strip the cylinder, inspect and where needed hone the bore and rod, fit a new seal kit, and rebuild it to manufacturer spec, then pressure-test it before it goes back on the boat. That applies to steering cylinders, stabiliser and platform rams and crane and davit cylinders. Where a ram is scored or pitted beyond a reseal we’ll tell you honestly and supply a replacement, but in many cases a reseal restores a sound cylinder at a fraction of the cost of replacing the whole assembly.
Why is my hydraulic steering or system losing pressure or leaking?
Most hydraulic pressure loss and leaks come down to worn seals, a tired pump or valve, air in the system, or a weeping fitting or hose — and on steering, soft or spongy feel usually means air or a seal letting by rather than the helm itself failing. The trouble is the symptom rarely shows where the fault is, so we diagnose across the whole circuit — pump, valves, cylinders, seals, hoses and fluid condition — to find the real cause instead of guessing. Salt, vibration, heat and contaminated fluid are the usual culprits in the marine environment. We fix the root cause, bleed and pressure-set the system, and where it helps, flush old fluid and tidy the plumbing so it stays reliable.
Do you fabricate custom hydraulic hoses and fittings?
Yes. When an off-the-shelf hose or fitting won’t suit — an awkward run, a non-standard length, an obsolete component or a one-off bracket — we make up custom hydraulic hoses and fabricate the fittings and mounts to fit your vessel. It means we can repair and recommission older or unusual systems and route new ones cleanly, rather than being limited to what’s on the shelf.
What hydraulic component and steering brands do you use and service?
We stock and fit Parker and Opacmare hydraulic components, and we install and service the major marine steering and hydraulic systems — including SeaStar/Dometic, HyDrive, BayStar and UltraFlex, and Capilano and Kobelt on larger vessels — without being tied to selling one badge. We recommend what suits your boat and what’s already aboard, then service and fault-find systems whether or not we supplied them. For thruster and stabiliser hydraulics we’re an authorised Sleipner Side-Power dealer as well.
Do you work on hydraulics dockside, or does the boat come to you?
Both. A lot of hydraulic work — fault-finding, fluid changes, bleeding, hose replacement and on-board servicing — is done dockside by our mobile teams across the Gold Coast and South East Queensland. Bigger jobs, such as powerpack and cylinder rebuilds or new crane, davit and platform installs, come into our Coomera workshop at Gold Coast City Marina where we’ve the bench, the press and the rest of the engineering team on hand. Either way you get the same engineers and the same documented sign-off.
