Whole-Vessel Systems Survey & Hardstand Maintenance, Flybridge Motor Yacht
A ten-day hardstand at The Boat Works became a whole-vessel systems survey: every valve, pump, thruster and hose inspected and reported as the work progressed, seized sea strainers stripped and rebuilt, the watermaker serviced, the fresh water system renewed tap by tap, and the vessel back in the water on schedule.
When the owner of a flybridge motor yacht took a hardstand window at The Boat Works, Coomera, the brief to us was simple: go through the whole vessel. Our engineers were aboard the next morning working to a written scope that covered every system on board, seacocks and valves, stabilisers, thrusters, steering, trim tabs, the watermaker, the anchor windlass, hydraulics and bilge pumps. Findings went to the owner as they happened, condition videos and written reports shared the same day, with hand-drawn plans mapping every valve and the bow thruster to the compartment above it. Seized main engine intake valves were freed and lubricated early in the week, and a set of wasting bow thruster anodes spotted in passing was approved for replacement the same morning.
The finds that mattered were below the floorboards. The sea strainers were seized under years of verdigris, one basket was being held in place by the growth inside it, and every basket handle in the set was broken. Offered a straight clean or a full refurbishment, the owner chose the full job in the chat within minutes, and new baskets and o-rings went on the order. The watermaker was serviced end to end: new 5-micron and 20-micron filters, a new carbon filter, fresh high-pressure pump oil and a replacement high-pressure discharge hose rated to 150 bar. A sink-by-sink inspection of the fresh water system produced a seven-point report, and the approved items followed it straight away, new flexible hoses through the cabin bathrooms, a replacement tap in the aft salon and a new filter cartridge once the spare in the storeroom turned out to be used.
The rest of the scope closed out as relaunch approached: bilge pumps proven in automatic and from the switchboard with the high-level alarms tested, trim tab valves cycled, a steering leak repaired, and the swim platform hydraulic power pack, seawater pumps and macerator pumps inspected and documented. The vessel went back in the water on schedule, ten days after our first morning aboard. One job deliberately ran past the splash: reassembly had split an aged strainer housing, its worn o-ring having forced over-tightening for years, so a new housing was ordered rather than patched. On a return visit the new strainer jar, baskets, seals and washers were fitted and the valves cycled, with the best of the old baskets cleaned up and left in the spares box. The owner's sign-off in the chat reads the way we like a job to end: working well.
