Sanitation Vacuum-Pump Rebuild & Motor Replacement — Visiting Superyacht
A routine Evac vacuum-pump overhaul aboard a visiting superyacht uncovered a failed electric motor — beyond economic repair. With the yacht bound for the Pacific on a tight schedule, we rebuilt the pump end, sourced a replacement motor from Europe and ran a six-unit fluid-analysis program that caught fuel dilution in a main engine before it became a breakdown.
The engineer of a visiting superyacht booked us to overhaul an Evac vacuum sanitation pump using spares carried on board. Our technician attended at Southport, collected the pump and stripped it in our Coomera workshop — where the routine job turned into a diagnosis. The macerator knife and intermediate flange showed wear from misalignment, the mechanical seal had failed and let water reach the main bearing, and the electric motor was worse again: damage around the rotor keyway, bearing scoring, and cut winding strands on one of the stator phases. Rewinding was quoted at two to three weeks — the same lead time as a new motor, and time the vessel did not have.
With the yacht scheduled to head north and on to the Pacific within days, we ran the parts search in parallel with the rebuild. Enquiries went to the nearest suppliers in Singapore and Japan while the pump end was cleaned, resealed and re-centred so the macerator could no longer run against its grinder ring, with spare bearings supplied for the sister pump. The approved replacement motor was ultimately imported from Europe; we verified its specifications against the vessel's 400 V / 50 Hz supply on arrival, fitted our dispatch labelling and sent it express to the yacht's agent at her next port so the refurbished pump could be recommissioned without holding up the cruising schedule.
The attendance also kicked off a fleet-style fluid program for the vessel: lubricating-oil samples from both main engines, both generators and both gearboxes, plus potable-water sampling — all coordinated with the laboratory so the crew could lodge follow-up samples from any Australian port. The reports flagged fuel dilution in the starboard main engine; we arranged a counter-sample protocol after running hours, couriered fresh sampling kits ahead of the vessel, and passed the findings — along with a control-system communication fault we helped scope — to the engine maker's Australian distributor. We also sourced replacement generator starter motors, with support continuing by email and phone well after the yacht left the Gold Coast.
