A davit rebuild, the Perth Boat Show, and sizing a generator

The monthly note from Marine Solutions Australia 7 September 2026 3 min read

This is the first of a monthly note from Marine Solutions Australia. Once a month, in the first week, you'll get a short update: a job from the workshop, what is in stock from the seven brands we hold dealerships for, where the team will be, and the guides our engineers are writing. If there is something you'd like covered, contact us and tell us.

Meanwhile the showroom at Pier 25, The Boat Works, is taking shape alongside our base at Gold Coast City Marina. Completion is anticipated for the end of the year; we'll show you inside when there is something to see.

In the workshop: a hydraulic davit crane rebuild

A davit is structural gear with a tender hanging off it, so a rebuild starts with the whole unit on the bench. This hydraulic crane came into the Coomera workshop creeping under load. The rams were stripped and rebuilt, seals, hoses and fluid renewed, the structure and controls inspected, and the crane recommissioned under load before it went back aboard. Most davit faults can be repaired, and owners are routinely told local service doesn't exist for their brand. It does.

Events: the Perth Boat Show

We spent 4 to 6 September at the Perth Boat Show, Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre, alongside our partner Twin Disc, talking Spot Zero water systems with WA owners: spot-free wash-downs and pure water aboard, portable or built in. Thank you to everyone who stopped by the stand. If you are a WA client and missed us, contact us and we'll pick up the conversation.

Dealer stock: Northern Lights and Spot Zero

Northern Lights generators, 10kW, 14kW and 16kW, are in stock at the showroom. Northern Lights builds to a simple idea: if a part doesn't exist, it can't fail. 1800 rpm for engine life, gear-driven pumps instead of belts, single-side servicing, 5 Year Warranty. We supply, install and service them as an authorised dealer.

Spot Zero watermakers and purifiers for the season ahead: spot-free wash-downs and pure water aboard, portable or built in. Send us the vessel and how you wash her down and we'll recommend the unit.

The guide of the month: what size generator does your boat need?

It's the question we hear most, on the dock and in the showroom, so our engineers have written the answer down. The guide walks through counting what really runs at once, allowing for the surge when motors start, why bigger isn't safer, 50 Hz versus 60 Hz, and the kW ranges that usually suit different vessel sizes. Free to read, no sign-up, and a new one each month. Next month: choosing an anchor winch.

We've opened a YouTube channel. The videos our team films on the job for Instagram and Facebook now live there too, titled so you can find the one you need; longer pieces will follow as we build them.

Book before the season

Spring is when the servicing calendar fills. Salt water and vibration wear marine systems whether the vessel was used over winter or not. Worth booking now: engine and generator service by hours run, impellers and anodes, air conditioning before the first hot week, winch and davit run under load, batteries and wiring. One visit can take in several of these, at Gold Coast City Marina or by mobile van at your berth. Send us the vessel, the engine hours and what's due, and we'll come back with a written quote and a date.
